A breakaway kit is a mandatory safety device required on all trailers over 2 tonne.
The breakaway kit comprises a battery and a breakaway switch that is connected between trailer and tow vehicle.
If the trailer becomes dislodged from the tow vehicle the breakaway switch closes circuit and activates electric magnets on the trailer for a period of 15 minutes via the breakaway battery.
The breakaway battery must contain a test button and indicator lights to indicate battery condition.
